Australasia: Emerging Regulation and a Strong iGaming Identity

Australasia primarily refers to Australia and New Zealand, along with a number of surrounding island nations. The Australian iGaming industry has been one of the forerunners in terms of regulating online gambling and betting, while New Zealand has historically been much slower to regulate its online market. Many operators have long served New Zealand punters under established international regimes such as the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA).

That said, New Zealand’s government is now in the process of overhauling its online casino landscape. The recently proposed Online Casino Gambling Bill, introduced by Brooke van Velden, Minister of Internal Affairs, aims to create a clearer, modernised regulatory framework for online gambling and betting.

Key iGaming Expos & Events in Australasia

The most sought-after iGaming expo in Australasia is, unsurprisingly, AEG – the Australasian Gaming Expo. It is widely regarded as “the cornerstone of the Australian gaming and hospitality industry” and remains the region’s defining event.

Smaller but more topic-focused events also exist, such as Senet’s “Backing The Punt” conference, which concentrates on the racing sector and broader discussions around Australia’s wagering industry. Interestingly, Senet itself is an Australian legal advisory firm specialising in gambling law, compliance, and regulatory matters.
