Middle East: A Culturally Complex but Rapidly Developing iGaming Region

The Middle East is a tricky, yet positively evolving region when it comes to online betting and gambling. Historically, the region has had a strong affinity for horse racing, partly due to locals owning some of the world’s finest racing breeds. However, regulation around iGaming is often influenced by factors that go far beyond traditional law. This is rooted in the region’s cultures and belief systems, and it affects more than just iGaming — it shapes policy across all sectors.

Despite these complexities, the region’s overall attitude toward online betting and gambling is steadily progressing. One key milestone is the creation of the GCGRA (General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority), which holds exclusive jurisdiction to regulate, license and supervise all commercial gaming activities and facilities in the UAE. This marks a significant shift toward structured, modernised governance of the industry.

Key iGaming Expos & Events in the Middle East

From an events perspective, the SiGMA Group has been one of the early and bold pioneers in the region. Held every February, SiGMA Eurasia has now carved out a solid place in the global iGaming events calendar. Despite cultural limitations, the expo has been instrumental in showcasing sectors such as payments and crypto — industries with a strong footprint in the region thanks to progressive local authorities.

Eventus has also expanded into the region with SPiCE Middle East, taking place this May in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. When it comes to sports betting, other related events exist with partial relevance to the Middle East, such as MESIF (Middle East Sports Investment Forum). Although focused on the region, MESIF does not take place in the Middle East — this year it is being held in Madrid, Spain, and in 2026 it will run twice, in London and Riyadh.
